It’s Time for God’s Latter Rain!

It’s Time for God’s Latter Rain!

The outpouring of God’s Spirit, like rain, is one of the greatest promises in the Word of God.

Beginning with ancient Israel, the Lord promised the outpouring of NATURAL rain as a universal blessing for all. God’s rain would refresh the soil, vegetation, atmosphere, animals, and people. What a tremendous blessing the outpouring of natural rain is for mankind!

GOLD & GLORY FLASHPOINT 1:

  • In addition to promising natural rain, the Lord also made promises of spiritual rain. These promises indicated that God would tangibly pour out His Spirit upon people. While natural rain nourishes the earth, spiritual rain is exclusively intended for PEOPLE. During Old Testament times, the prophet Joel became a KEY figure in the discourse on God’s spiritual rain. In Joel 2:23, the prophet prophesied the outpouring of spiritual rain in two distinct seasons:
      1. The Former Rain
      2. The Latter Rain
  • The blessing of God’s spiritual rain was clearly intended for the NEW Testament era, commonly referred to as the “Church Age.” History confirms this fact, as recorded in Acts chapter 2. On the first day of Pentecost, ten days after the ascension of Jesus, God’s spiritual rain was poured out upon 120 disciples for the FIRST time EVER in the Upper Room. On this FIRST and historic day of the outpouring of God’s spiritual rain, Peter began preaching and confirmed the prophetic promise of Joel (Acts 2:17-21; see also Joel 2:28-31).
  • According to this initial account of the outpouring of God’s Spirit, the spiritual rain of God was not a phenomenon characterized by being “decent and in order.” The traditional structures of organized religion typically adhere to doing everything decently and in order. Everything is meticulously planned and scripted by man. Since the Church is actually controlled by its Church leadership, there is often no room left for the outpouring of God’s Spirit. Clearly, the spiritual rain of God always originates from the Lord’s authority and not from human control. Secondly, the manifestation of God’s spiritual rain in human terms is chaotic and completely out of sync with the regular program of the Sunday service.
  • Religious spirits have kept the Church in bondage for many years, even in recent times. The outpouring of God’s spiritual rain is SO powerful that it contradicts the system of the organized Church. Not only is the rain of God unanticipated, but it is also actively shunned and rejected at large. In contrast, the prophet Zechariah commands us to pray for the latter rain outpouring of God: “Ask the Lord for rain in the time of the latter rain…” (Zechariah 10:1a).
  • As a child, I remember growing up in South Africa, where my home country often suffered severe natural droughts. The Dutch Reformed Church, of which we were a part, was the predominant Christian denomination in the country, with congregations established throughout the entire region. From the church’s headquarters, a call would go out to the hundreds of congregations nationwide. Churches would hold special gatherings on Saturdays at various times throughout the day, even into the evening, allowing Christians to come together and PRAY FOR RAIN, natural rain
  • This Saturday ritual of praying for rain could continue for weeks, sometimes even months. We would set aside everything to participate. Farmers would travel from remote areas, making the long journey to their local Dutch Reformed Church. No sacrifice was too great for the people of the church to drop everything and travel nationwide to pray for much-needed natural rain, as directed and demanded by the Church leadership. The entire country would enter a state of mourning, pleading with God for rain to fall upon our land.
  • After my encounter with the Lord in 1979 and after my subsequent baptism in the Spirit shortly thereafter, my eyes were opened to the magnificence of God’s spiritual rain. I was astounded. How was it possible that our church denomination prayed so fervently for natural rain, yet never once gathered to pray and ask the Lord for spiritual rain? Why not?
  • It was because our church did not believe in it. Referring to the outpouring of the Spirit in Jerusalem and the early Church was not sufficient to alter our church’s belief system. The argument against the outpouring of God’s Spirit was always framed this way: “Yes, God did pour out His Spirit upon the early disciples, but it was only a one-time event (Acts 2). Oh really! How would you then characterize the SUBSEQUENT and new outpouring in Acts 4? Again, the Church’s argument that the outpouring of the Spirit was necessary only to initiate and establish the early Church is false. They further argued that the outpouring of the Spirit served to help the Church survive the severe persecution from both the Jewish leadership and the Roman Empire.” This assertion is completely false. Thus, the Dutch Reformed Church was in error.

GOLD & GLORY FLASHPOINT 2:

  • In Hosea 6:3, the prophet conveys that the Lord will come to us “like the rain, like the former and the latter rain…,” obviously in TWO DIFFERENT SEASONS of outpourings. How simple is this to understand? The outpouring of the Spirit is like natural rain. Each year, there are two seasons of natural rain: 1) the early, and 2) the latter. In Israel, the former season of outpouring yields a harvest of fruit, while the latter rain season produces the harvests of the fields, primarily wheat and barley. Even a child can grasp the fact that during both seasons of rain, there are numerous showers on different days. It does not rain just ONCE during the early season and ONCE during the latter rain season. Certainly not!
  • Both these seasons of rain produced numerous continual outpourings of different rain showers throughout the entire season of both the early and the latter rain. However, the main problem that the Church faces regarding the outpouring of spiritual rain is not doctrinal as we previously explained. The bigger problem is the MANIFESTATION of God’s spiritual rain, which is neither quiet nor controlled. It does not occur in a remote corner of the Church, something that you don’t pay much attention to. Oh no!
  • The outpouring of God’s Spirit is powerful, vibrant, energetic, and all-encompassing. Like natural rain, when it rains spiritually, it can cover an entire church or city. This outpouring of the Spirit will also disrupt the regular schedule of organized Church. We witness the power of God’s manifestation in Acts chapter 2, where the rain of God descended upon everyone in the Upper Room. It is recorded that they were all FILLED with Holy Spirit’s Presence, or RAIN. After being FILLED with God’s spiritual rain, 120 people burst forth into the streets of Jerusalem. They did not behave like typical churchgoers; instead, they spoke aloud in various different tongues as they were inspired by the Spirit.
  • Foreigners in the city heard the disciples speak the praises of God in everyone’s individual language. This manifestation was loud! It was uncontrollable and it was NATURALLY chaotic. Furthermore, these people acted as if they were intoxicated,  obviously, laughing, shaking, and falling all over the place, thus making a spectacle of themselves throughout the city of Jerusalem. The manifestation of spiritual rain is largely rejected by the present day Church because of its demonstrative and powerful manifestations. Yet, we fondly recall the great days of former outpourings of God’s Spirit.
  • I often refer to the great outpouring of God in the decade of the 90s and early 2000s. But those days are long behind us. For various reasons, we have not seen a national outpouring of God’s rain here in America, nor globally. The Church universally has been in a season of drought. Today, God is blessing America again with the restoration of our country to political order and prosperity. Right now the state of the country and the economy is the best it has been in five years, and there is a great wave of an unimaginably great flow of an incomprehensible prosperity throughout America over the next few years!
  • But let’s conclude with this today and remember the words of Jeremiah, who stated that the showers have been WITHHELD and there has been NO latter rain. This is where we are today. Certainly, we’ve come through a very long season of spiritual drought. While there have been limited movements of God’s Spirit and some manifestations in various churches across the country, the Lord has withheld a TANGIBLE outpouring of spiritual rain. Recently, there have been no new rain showers or fresh outpourings of spiritual rain.
  • Let me encourage you with this. I know in my heart that fresh rain from God is on its way. It is the time for it. A new season of the latter rain outpourings of God now awaits us. However, the Church has a part to play in the spiritual outpouring of rain. I believe that to the extent that we do our part, the coming rain of God will be accelerated and reach us quicker. Let’s all bind together as one in a simple but heartfelt prayer. This prayer has to come up out of our hearts and not just roll off our minds. Let’s ask the Lord to give us the THIRST FOR HIS SPIRITUAL RAIN so that through the power of thirst we will pray intensely and sincerely from our hearts, asking the Lord for rain. This compassionate prayer is the command of the prophet Zechariah, yet it is so simple.
  • Let’s ask the Lord for rain, that is, spiritual rain in this end-time season of the latter rain. We need fresh showers RIGHT NOW, not only in America but also throughout the whole world. Lord, we ask you to pour out new showers of rain upon the Church and eventually on every person on the face of the globe. We are asking you for spiritual rain in this critical day and hour of the last-day Church. Father, we ask for spiritual rain, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
